Step 1: Start the Free Trial

I started by going to marketmuse.com and selecting “Start my free trial.”

After creating an account and starting my 7-day free trial, I was brought to the Start Page. MarketMuse offered six workflows:

  1. Optimize: Improve a page or draft.
  2. Analyze Competitors: Use heatmaps to compare the content quality of competitors.
  3. X-Ray SERP: Perform a Search Results Page analysis.
  4. Assess Clusters: Analyze the content quality of a website’s topic cluster.
  5. Research Topics: Create a topic model.
  6. Discover Links: Find internal and external linking opportunities.

You’ll want to use the tools in the order that makes the most sense. Here’s what I’d recommend:

  1. Research your topic.
  2. Use the X-Ray SERP to see what you’re up against.
  3. Analyze competitors to improve quality.
  4. Optimize your content.
  5. Assess clusters.
  6. Discover links to connect everything.

Step 2: Research Your Topic

Before you write a single word or analyze anything, you need to create a topic model. To start researching, I selected “Research Topics.”

At the top, I added my topic, “sustainable gardening,” and hit “Run.”

Immediately, MarketMuse gave me the search volume, CPC, trend, variants, and suggested mentions for a full snapshot of the topic landscape.

Step 3: Use the SERP X-Ray

Next to the Topic Navigator, I selected “SERP X-Ray.” It allowed me to see why the top 20 results were actually ranking. This included SERP stats and organic results.

The SERP stats provided an overview of the statistics from the top 20 search results. This included what type of media was used in the articles (images/videos), the average number of internal and external links, the intent, average word count, and H2s per page.

Below the SERP stats were the Organic Results. It showed me the top 20 search results for the search term with the following information:

  • Number of links on each page
  • Presence of videos or images
  • Page’s ranking intent
  • Content Score and Word Count compared to MarketMuse’s recommended target

I recommend using this for every article to avoid chasing keywords that aren’t worth targeting.

Step 4: View the Heatmap

Next to the SERP X-Ray, I selected the Heatmap. I could order it by relevance, gaps, and must-haves. This showed me exactly where competitors were strong and weak.

Step 5: Optimize Your Content

Next, I wanted to optimize my content. I went back to the start page and selected “optimize.”

At the top, I inserted my topic and hit “Run/Fetch.”

This opened an empty document where I could start using AI to generate an article and hit my target keywords. It also gave me a content score and word count.

Step 6: Create an Outline

To start generating AI content, I put a “/” into the empty document. I could ask AI to write anything, generate content with AI, or edit/review content. I started by creating an outline.

A few seconds later, MarketMuse used AI to generate an outline on the topic I gave it: sustainable gardening. From the outline alone, my content score went from 0 to 28!

Because I’d already done the research and competitive analysis, I knew exactly what to add. I incorporated the related topics from my topic model and made sure I was covering the gaps I found in competitor content.

When writing your content on MarketMuse, don’t bother chasing a perfect score. It won’t make much of a difference for SEO, and the content will start feeling forced.

After all your content is optimized and your clusters are solid, don’t forget to internally and externally link your articles. These links help search engines understand your site’s structure and boost your content’s authority.

To find linking opportunities with MarketMuse, I went back to the Start page and selected “Discover Links.” This tool shows you specific internal and external linking opportunities you’re missing.

But when it comes to MarketMuse’s suggestions, it’s important to use your judgment. For example, MarketMuse might suggest linking to Wikipedia or major authority sites, but make sure it actually adds value for your readers.

One final note: MarketMuse is not a magic button. You still need to write good content that actually helps people.

However, if you use these tools in this order (research first, analyze competition, optimize your content, assess your clusters, and then link everything together), you’re setting yourself up for much better results than just randomly optimizing pages and hoping for the best!
